The Video Platform Offers The Community Control to Reduce AI-Generated Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that allows them to reduce the amount of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform disclosed that it presently contains in excess of 1 bn AI videos.

Trial and Implementation

This change is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a widespread release. This advancement comes amid a surge in AI-generated material, fueled by new AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that nearly 10% of the fastest-growing content creators on another major platform exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this content is deemed “AI slop”, a label for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is typically illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to science explainers, and we want to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own choices,” commented a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

The platform disclosed that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its app labeled as made with AI. In total, more than 100 million videos are uploaded to the service each day, making AI-generated material a limited portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the level of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the “manage topic” option in the app and picking the AI content topic. Other topics that can already be modified under the filter encompass politics, fashion, aesthetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

The platform’s policies require creators to label lifelike AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful fake videos of celebrities or critical incidents. Any believable AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its user guidelines.

In addition, the app will from now on add an artificially created tag to content made using its own AI tools, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing AI-generated material. This step is intended to stop users from attempting to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

The company is also introducing a two million dollar awareness program for professionals and organizations to produce learning resources about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support charitable organizations focused on teaching computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has defended its safety measures, amid discussion over plans to make redundant a large number of review team members in the United Kingdom. The company is set to cut a significant number of roles in its user protection department in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists expressing worry that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive explained that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by filtering out the most distressing content before it is viewed by people. The company stated a notable drop in shocking and graphic content reviewed by human moderators over the past year due to the use of its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to combine humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us operate efficiently.”
